All-in-One Hardware Packaging
The course's first project focused on creating an all-in-one hardware package for completing a household task. Using foam core and paper techniques, we were to produce a full scale package that properly contained all relevant hardware.
The household task I decided on was painting a wall or room. My packaging contained everything required (with the exception of paint), including
Tarp
Sheets of sandpaper
Angled and flat brushes
Paint roller with spare roll
Tub of spackle
Putty knife
Painter's tape
Stack of five paint trays
Concept sketch of contents of the kit.
Concept sketches of possible assembly methods for the kit.
After creating concept sketches and getting my idea approved, I created a foam core prototype using craft knives, white artist tape, and hot glue. The kit was about the size of a paper ream box, and had three layers to store all hardware.
Final product, with all layers assembled. Hand hold is visible on the small face below the lid.
Top view of the empty box. Small supports for the seconds layer can be seen as triangles in each of the four corners.
Box with bottom layer of hardware placed inside. A foam core proxy (lower right of tray) was used for the spackle tub.
Box with middle layer placed inside, resting on the corner supports. A pair of hand holds suggest a balanced position to grip the insert. Paintbrushes are secured with contoured supports, and positioned to keep the center of mass near the middle of the insert.
Box with top layer placed inside, containing drop cloth and sandpaper. A pair of hand holds suggest a balanced position to grip the insert.
